Country Guides > Spain > Costa de la LuzSpain's 'Secret Coast'On the border of Spain and Portugal on the Atlantic coast, the ‘Coast of Light’ is also known as the Spanish Algarve, and with an ever-increasing number of quality golf courses the name is becoming more and more apt, and yet the Costa de la Luz still manages to retain a gentler pace of life. The coastline is blessed with beautiful sandy beaches which stretch as far as the eye can see, many of which are Blue Flag and so offer a safe bathing area for families. Picturesque marinas and fishing villages dot the coastline where you can feast on the catch of the day, or head inland to the white villages and enjoy tapas with the locals or stroll through the gently undulating, lush countryside.
This Coast is often divided into two sections; Costa de la Luz -Huelva Province stretches from Ayamonte to the Donaña Park and the River Guadalquivir. Beautiful golden sands and small seaside towns devoted to national tourism are spread throughout. From West to East: Ayamonte, Isla Cristina, Lepe, Islantilla, La Antilla, El Rompido, Punta Umbria. Ayamonte The first town you come to as you cross from Portugal in to Spain, Ayamonte stands high above the river Guadiana and appears to be gazing towards Portugal. It is a frontier town and an important fishing port. Its dockyards and other naval trappings further enhance its maritime character. During the summer months the ferry, which connects it to neighbouring Portugal, sees a continual coming and going of travellers, and the town becomes especially lively. In Ayamonte, there are neatly whitewashed houses, pleasant squares, Baroque churches and some traces of the Manueline style owing to the influence of its proximity to Portugal. There is also a beautiful promenade along the harbour, which is lined with palm trees called the Paseo de la Ribera, as well as stepped streets, and some aristocratic mansions and palaces. Isla Canela Isla Canela and Punta del Moral, with a length of 7 km, these beaches of fine sand, belonging to the town of Ayamonte, boast a tourist complex complete with everything necessary to enjoy an unforgettable holiday. The golf, tennis and water sports facilities are only a small example. Islantilla Isla Cristina is a town with a rich maritime flavour. Its extensive beach, 8 km long, and the clemency of its weather have given it a great tradition of tourism, managing to triple its population during summer. It is very well equipped for aquatic sports. El Rompido El Rompido is a small fishing village situated at the mouth of the river Piedras, dependent on the town of Cartaya, which has a population of 10,000 and contains the ruins of a Roman castle, the convent of Las Mercedes (C. 18th) and the church of San Pedro. El Rompido boasts a magnificent beach, 10 km long, which runs parallel to a strip of sand dunes, and separated from it by a 300 meter-wide length of sea water. From its pine groves, without doubt the best view of the whole of the coast of Huelva can be enjoyed. Sanlucar de Guadiana PROPERTIES We have the best range of properties available including:
